MOVING BEYOND THE AMERICAN DREAM FOR NIGERIAN STUDENTS

​Towards the end of 2025, the US government announced new visa restrictions affecting Nigerian nationals applying for student visas (F-1, M-1, J-1). According to official statements, these changes are aimed at strengthening security screening. From 1 January 2026 onwards, many new visa applications may be refused, delayed, or subjected to stricter eligibility checks. While visas issued before this date remain valid, obtaining a new US student visa has become significantly more uncertain and, in some cases, nearly impossible for many Nigerian applicants.

Although these policies are not directly targeted towards student visas, they are expected to substantially impact Nigeria’s contribution to the US international student population, which accounted for nearly 2 percent of the total (making Nigeria the 8th highest source country) for the 2024/25 academic year, according to IIE Open Doors – International Students Data 2025.

Understandably, this has caused concern among Nigerian students who have long seen the US as their top study destination. However, for anyone aspiring to earn a global degree, there is little reason to worry. The international education landscape offers numerous strong alternatives to the US, many of which are highly welcoming to international students while maintaining the same level of prestige. While the US may have partially closed its doors to Nigerian applicants at this time, several other destinations continue to provide excellent academic and career opportunities.
