About the Masterclass
In January 2025 New York City joined a handful of large metropolitan areas across the world introducing its version of congestion pricing as a means to reduce traffic and promote public transportation in the most densely populated parts of the city. The origins of the program date back decades, and the benefits and drawbacks of such a program have been hotly debated at the local, state, and national-level. Dr. Ansel Schiavone and Dr. Aleksandr Gevorkyan – both professors in the Economics Department at St John’s University – have received a multi-year research grant to study the effects of congestion pricing on NYC. They currently lead a team of undergraduate researchers in investigating various aspects of the program, as well as broader questions surrounding urban economics.
